Here and there

What do they do in India? Get up in the morning, have coffee, take a shower, do some puja, have breakfast and sit in front of TV, watching Meggga serials till noon, take lunch, have a li'l nap, watch serials again, go for a small walk in the evening, come back to watch the serials, have dinner and go to bed.

What do they do abroad? Everything mentioned above, if one just manages to get the Indian channels.. Tie them up in their own same world, albeit in a different environment. So, no complaints of 'loneliness' from them anymore.. The lives of parents of NRI's have taken a dramatic turn for the past few years.. Vaazhga Megaserials!!

Ashok, Afghanistan-le Indian channels unda?
--------------------------------------------------
Raz, illaiye.. US-le kooda same episodes, albeit after the time difference, parkka mudiyumey.. I have heard about it in Sun TV programs... people, correct me if I am wrong.
---------------------------------
Mitr, good to hear about something different.. I really appreciate what your parents do. But, they would find it odd when a conversation around them passionately involves mega-serials, no?
------------------------------------------------
Veda, romba correct. Andha arattai kooda megaserial characters- suthi varumey.. I know of lot of telephone conversations go on like 'Mangai-la ava enn appadi sonna? cha.. manasu kashtama irukku.." !!!! I thought of including it in the daily routine; the parents would find similar parents living in big cities abroad to chat about it; or, one has to teach them to use yahoo messenger to chitchat about this with their relatives/friends in India.. :-)

Naana? mega serial-a? Chance-ey ille.. Enakku mukkiyamana vishayam unga ID.... adhu illama edhuvumey ennaley muzhu manasa panna mudiyathu.. megaserials-le adhudhaan first casualty..
------------------------------------------
Karthik, LOL.. what time frames are we talking about? True.. comparing these serials with those 13- or 26- week episodes of DD.. mm.. I have nothing else to do than SIGH..
--------------------------------
Deepak, if we guys also start doing such things, god save the nation!! May your prediction come true.. but it looks like the megaserials are here to stay. Such is the vice-like grip they have got on our makkal...

Anu, yeah.. 8-8:30 is always newstime with dinner at our home in Chennai. :-) Nowadays I prefer internet news.. Too many Indian news channel for comfort..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Balaji, Thanks for the info.. thats what I thought too.. But I guess there are some Hindi channels which show old shows only, with a time delay of a few months.. (Star Plus comes to my mind). Glad that Sun TV is up-to-date with what they show in India.. :-)

Ashok, oops.. should have asked "Tamil channels unda?". I have heard of Hindi channels/Bollywood being famous there.. but how about tamil ones? In fact, I need to read your blog fully, in order to understand the life of an Indian in Afghanistan. You know, the perception is different; but for an AU graduate to work in that place is surprising for me - What media project and what the reality is.
