Best theme music scores

While listening to Pudhupettai, I realized that it had an unusual number of 'music only' bits which were so far referred to as 'Theme music' or 'Spirit of -----' (movie name) etc. I think the first movie to have a separate theme bit was Punnagai Mannan, in which Ilayaraja had used not one but two bits.. AR Rahman, probably thanks to his association with Ilayaraja during Punnagai Mannan, realized its novelty and potential and started applying the concept for his movies more.. Here are my favorite theme musical scores:

1) Bombay: The flute bit is the best I have heard so far.. though the song 'MalarOdu malar indru..' comes much later, the music until then is mesmerizing...

2) Punnagai mannan: The part Ilayaraja had used from 'Nothing but wind' was very famous and sounded 'different' those times.. First time computer-generated music in Tamil cinema..(or Indian cinema itself?)

3) Rangeela: It was called the 'Spirit of Rangeela'.. What a beat it was.. RG Varma had to use 'slow motion' in the movie to rescue his choreographer.

4) 7G Rainbow Colony: Though Yuvan seemed to have been inspired from Spanish music, the score had enough variations and it was interesting..

5) Taal: Beat of passion.. starts slowly and gradually picks up momentum and ends up with a scream (unnecessary and lousy part though)..

The others I have liked are from Anniyan, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kadhal Kondenn and Pudhupettai.

Good collection Raju.. I also like "Sowkarpettai" in Boys. Though it is not there in the cassette/CD, that one and the Ayyappan song (boys-rare-bits) are too good. It was another masterpiece for ARR.

Raju, have you heard the theme songs from 7G Rainbow colony & Kadal Kondaen, the 2cds came out later with extra background songs. All are great, I have not hear Punnagai mannan theme songs, I have heard all the songs, I have to check them out. Raju, check out the Ajith's Godfather trailer http://www.ajithfans.com/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=800, the music sounds good in the trailer, I think we will hear some good tunes by ARR in this movie. Although from the trailer, one of the songs look very familiar to ayangarru veetu azhage from anniyan, and also the hairstyle looks like anniyans. On the whole, i hope its a good mvoie for ajith.

Good selection Raju.

If I am not mistaken, the Punnagai mannan theme was actually scored by Rahman (then known as Dilip?), when he was in Raasa's troupe.

Karthik, yeah.. in those times, PM's music was so refreshing..

Pudhupettai songs are good.. but not as good as 7G... it is different..

Ash, Wish you a very happy new year too..

Ilayaraja's right notes coming to him at right time is not happening nowadays... which is a big loss.. I thought his music was timeless and he had the knack of adapting to the changing times..

Taal's theme music is an intriguing one.. I can hardly figure out which instrument makes what kind of sound in that one.. Interesting info on santoor..

Anu, thanks.. I have never heard the 'Sowkarpettai' song.. I remember the Ayyappan song while watching the movie though.. Wonder why he didnt include it in the disc/tape. What is boys-rare-bits? Would a search on that let me listen to the songs you have mentioned?

Nice list of themes.
fyi
visit this site http://itwofs.com which lists the songs by famous Indian music directors and the tunes that inspired them to do their hit songs.

Paurna, I remember only one theme song from 7G.. I need to look for it elsewhere..

And, on Pudhupettai, he is heavily inspired indeed.. When I listened to them, I remembered dolphins jumping and the killer whale Shamu playing around.. yes, the music used in Sea World, Orlando had quite a bit of Godfather (in fact, the key sounds were pretty much the same that Yuvan has used.

Vanathi, Taal was good...

Gowrishankar, agree with u..

Priya, yep.. very unique that was..

Nitin, yep.. I heard atleast one each from both the movies.. the ones that were there in the first-released CDs.. I will certainly look for the extra background songs that you have mentioned..

I strongly recommend you Punnagai mannan theme song.. As I said before, it pretty well suits even for the present time.. no stamp on it..

Thanks for the info on Godfather trailer.. It was good. It was interesting to see Ajit in his old and new looks.. I donno how KS Ravikumar would have used the difference..

I too noticed the similarity with Anniyan song.. with two heroines (the other being the talented Kanika), and the theme of dada, let us see how the movie turns out to be.. It is a crucial one for Ajith, KS Ravikumar and even AR Rahman as well.. It has been a while since he gave a hit in Tamil (last was Ayudha Ezhuthu, almost 2 years ago).

Deepak, thanks.

Yeah, the man behind the synthesizer for Punnagai mannan theme was indeed AR Rahman. How ironic u see.. apparently, Vairamuthu split away from Raja bcos he thought the use of computer-generated music would kill the effect of lyrics; but eventually he joined hands with Rahman and became his 'AasthAna kavignar'..

good list.

thiruda thiruda score kooda add pannalaam.

ARR with a good director is awesome. There are some BG scores in Bombay which are fresh in my mind even now.

Aravind, thanks.

I know about ITWOFS and visit often. A nice compilation of the lifts.. No one is spared in that list, and in my favorite themes, I think everything is genuine, I guess.. Kadhal kondenn seems to be the only inspired theme.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prabu, did Thiruda Thiruda have any theme music? The music overall and various interludes were extremely good.

I agree with you on ARR with good directors. There are some diros who have the knack of extracting the best out of him and the result is lots of memorable songs.

Thiruda thiruda theme music just now kettenn... Thanks a million, Prabu, for this info. Despite being an ardent ARR fan, I somehow missed it.. :-( It is awesome too..

The title credits and a few other themes in Rhythm are good.

Raju said...

Narayanan, I love the songs of Rhythm.. I dont remember the title credits.. Pity it wasnt added as additional theme bit in the album..

Good observation there! Heard the violin bit in 'sundari kannal oru sedhi' from 'thalabadhi'? I feel that even though South Indians hear to a lot of western albums, they just succumb to Ilayaraja's music anytime...

Raju said...

Cherrysweets, welcome here..

Thanks.. Yeah, I do remember the violin bit. I liked your usage of the word 'succumb' for Ilayaraja's music.. it is very true.. Most of the young music lovers would fondly remember the 80's as the best era of Tamil music..
