Unique albums

Most of the tamil film music albums are monotonous nowadays.. with a 'kuthu' paattu, item number, duets, 'hero-worship' song and some senti ones. I have found a few albums quite unique in this sense..

1) Kadhal Desam: All the songs were by male singers; in all the songs, both the heroes, Abbas and Vineeth appeared. One of the singers, SPB, who sang a passionate song for both the heroes (Ennai kaanavillaiye) also acted as the heroine's father. And, I think it is the only movie so far in which AR Rahman has sung two full songs.

2) Snehithiye: Just opposite to Kaadhal Desam.. all female singers.

3) Rhythm: Each of the five songs had a theme based on five elements of nature.

4) Minsara Kanavu: 3 National awards for this single movie - Chithra, SPB and AR Rahman.

5) Hey, Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke: Five songs - each composed by different music directors (all debuting).

my favorite albums in there is Rhythm, Minsaru Kanavu, & Hey, Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke. Didnt like Kadhal Desam and Snehithiye that much. I didn't know that Hey, Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke had 5 different music directors. I liked the songs, and in my music collection I just have it as Srinivas.

Priya, yep.. they had some great songs.. Minsara Kanavu avvlava pidikkatha?

Vatsan, long time.. Hope you settled well in Singapore.

Rhythm had lovely songs but among the five, Minsara Kanavu is my best.. mainly due to Vennilave and superior picturization of all the songs..

knew about #s 3, 4 & 5 and i would've guessed #2 since it was an all-female cast. but #1 was a surprising tidbit. a love story with no female singers... interesting :)

i didn't know abt. minsara kanavu :-)... but these unique albums are pretty good... rhythm is very soothing... and the song radhai manathil from snekithiye is pretty decent...

i think ayutha ezhuthu also fits into this list :-)... all the songs in the movie don't go into any of the dream modes :-)... it comes as a part of the movie w/o going around trees or swiss or NZ or any special setting or whatever... but am sure there are other movies that had this... but i can't remember of any of the recent movies that follows this trend...

and thanks for patiently answering my stupid questions abt. ur research...

Apart from Snehidhiye I love each and every song from the other 4. That was an interesting trivia on Kadhal desam. Never realised till now :)

In HNRAI my most fave one is "Ini naanum naan illai". Sweet lyrics and fitting music by Srinivas.
#s 1,3,4 - I can't single out any song as the best, for it would be sheer injustice to the others :)

Surprised by many of the tips. Especially about Rhythm and the five songs are five elements oriented.

Good research.

raju arr has sung 3 songs in Rang De Basanti. But none of them are solo.i think he sung 3 songs in AE as well.

Like most commentors here, I too didn't know about that "all songs sung by male singers" in 'Kadhal desam'. Happened to listen to 'Ennai kaanavillaiye..' during our looong journey recently and wow! what a song!
Haven't heard any songs from #2 and #5. 'Rhythm' is another wonderful album by ARR.

I wonder what happened to the director of Minsaru Kanavu, Rajiv menon. he directed Kandukondain Kandukondain, and after that he disappeared from cinemas. I know he did something with Morning Raga.

Balaji, yeah.. Love story, esp. having 'Kadhal' in the title having no duet song.. or even a solo for Tabu. There is this 'Idhu kadhal ennum noi.. oru kannipennai paaru' bit from Anupama in 'Hello Doctor' but one can pretty much neglect that for all practical purposes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Karthik, radhai manadhil is my favorite too from Snehithiye.. I thought about AE too.. but, as you said, nothing to write special about the songs.

Your questions were very relevant and were far from being stupid.. :-) Thanks for ur qns..

Anu, thanks..

yours truly, pretty much my thoughts exactly on all your points.

Balaji, research senju senju ellaathuleyum edhavadhu 'search' panna thonudhu.. :-)

Nag, any such things in Telugu?

Paurna, 3 in Rang De Basanti? I listened to the album only once while on work so didnt particularly pay any attention..

Did he sing 3 in AE? Yeah, but apart from 'Jana gana' the other two had tiny bits from him, right? IN fact, Kadhal Desam had the third song from him (apart from Hello doctor and Mustafa) - 'Kalloori saalai' where he sang alongside Hariharan.. I could feel his enthusiastic involvement with the album that way making it a very memorable one..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aparna, yeah.. Kadhal Desam songs are always there in my CD/iPod/MP3 player.. Would love to listen to them everyday.. One of timeless classics..
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nitin, yeah.. I wish he makes more movies.. I guess he is fully into ads and is one of the most sought-after ad filmmakers in India today...

Raju,
There was a song that goes like 'Dhoora Desm Poreegala' which often gets associated with Snehidhiye recorded cassettes I've heard, it can also be found here. I never got an opportunity to see the original audio cassette however, the song never appeared in the movie.

There is one more movie, 'Kannil Theriyum Kavidhaigal' the movie that the rare singer combo SPB-SJ and P.Susila singing in a single song. That movie had 5 music directors too. Earliest with multiple composers probably would be 'Genova', MSV's first album.

One more unique song would be 'Agaram Ippo Sigaram aachu', Yesudas sings in SPB's composition.

Narayanan, except 'Radhai manadhil', I have hardly heard other songs of Snehithiye.. so, neenga solra song enakku theriyathu.

KADHAL DESAM HAS "ANUPAMA"Singing "HELLO DOCTOR" song..

Raju said...

Anon, yeah she did.. but it was more like a chorus uttering "Idhu kadhal ennum noi; oru kanni pennai paaru".. so I didn't think she can be considered a singer for that song..
